Offsite SEO Comes Into Focus

SEO is a mix of onsite and offsite techniques to ultimately increase your website’s visibility and targeted traffic. I think it is somewhat safe to say that for the most part, people–especially those new to SEO–focus on the onsite aspects of SEO in a disproportionate amount to offsite SEO.

But that is really changing, as the article The New Era of Inbound Marketing also supports. Which is better to have: A website with killer content but no links or a website with mediocre content and tons of links? Clearly, having both is optimal, but if I had to choose, it would be the second case.

I think you are going to see a glut of new back-linking and link-building books hit the market soon (including the book I am working on). Currently, these types of offsite activities only occupy a chapter or two in most SEO books–when full volumes could be filled with tips, tricks, trends and techniques.

If you haven’t taken the time to look outward (for inbound links), now is the time to start shifting focus. Yes, onsite SEO is important and is an important part of the overall equation. But so is offsite SEO (link building, branding and reputation management). Ignore it at your own risk.
