Directory Submissions Starting Point
Ready to get started building links to your website? Don’t know where to start? A good first step is submitting your website to a number of search engines and web directories. You should start with Google—of course—at www.google.com/addurl. You should also submit to Bing, Yahoo, and Ask.com.
To submit to Ask.com, you need to create a sitemap, post it to your website, and then use the following URL:
http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http%3A//www.yoursite.com/sitemap.xml
Ask will crawl your website and grab your sitemap. It’s that simple.
There are other ways to help Google “find” your website, such as building DoFollow links on blogs or submitting a sitemap to Google’s webmaster’s tools. Furthermore, placing links within a number of blogs will get you found by many of the other search engines as well.
But directly asking Google for a crawl is okay as well.
Web Directory Submissions
Next, take a look at a number of general, trusted and valuable web directories. You don’t want to simply submit to any directory. Some directories have been flagged as spam-havens, and you are going to want to steer clear of those. Start with the blue-chip general directories, and when you have submitted to those, move on to good niche and regional directories.
Niche and Regional Directory Submissions
You can find niche and regional directories by searching for your keyword and “add url”, “submit a link”, and/or adding your city’s or state’s name. By submitting to regional directories, you get the added bonus of building citations to boost your local search results.
Avoiding Submission Services
There are plenty of submission services out there that will submit your site to hundreds if not thousands of directories. But you will get the good with the bad. You are far better off doing the leg work yourself and submitting to a hundred or so quality directories, then putting your website’s reputation in the hands of people, who frankly, don’t care.
