A Case for Green SEO
Green SEO: (definition) An attitude and practice of only creating useful, relevant and unique links and web content that contribute to the dialogue of the Internet and benefit everyone.
SEO Noise (pollution) : (definition) All the mini-sites, articles, link-building, and other SEO activities that people create in an attempt to drive traffic to their website and/or increase their search engine ranking AND that add absolutely no value to the Internet.
So how much of the Internet do you thing is SEO noise pollution? 10%, 20%, 30%… I would be willing to bet that somewhere around 20% of the Web is nothing more than SEO garbage—of which I have done my part to add to and for which should apologize. My bad.
We Should All Think Green SEO
In the spirit of greener technology to save the earth, perhaps we all need to think about greener SEO to save the Internet. Think of green SEO as SEO practices that do not pollute the Internet with meaningless and useless links, unnecessary Web content, and black-hat techniques that choke-out of the SERPs useful search results, that make invisible the most useful Web content, and that use-up precious Web resources.
I know that search engines, directories and other SEO related websites will trend towards green SEO, as an overabundance of garbage will render any Website, useless to Web surfers. For example, an article directory that has so many articles on the topic of “used cars”, many of which have little if anything to do with used cars but are SEO-crafted articles to grab those interested in used cars and redirect them to articles about new cars, motorcycles, or some other vaguely-related topic.
Eventually, people will stop using that article directory because they can’t find the relevant information they are looking for and move to an article directory that is more relevant… greener. The former article directory in essence becomes a toxic wasteland, a victim of its own relaxed policy on SEO noise pollution.
Reducing Your SEO Footprint
We can all reduce our SEO footprint by adhering to good, green SEO practices—better known as white hat SEO—and by avoiding spammy, abusive and toxic practices.
I know it is a difficult choice to make, when there are a half dozen websites that are willing to pollute the Internet without hesitation. But ultimately, I would hope that search engines and websites will help to weed-out the polluters and penalize them. Ultimately, maintaining a good green SEO policy should help your website climb above the noise of the Internet.
